After graduating from a master’s program, students in the Faculty of Production Engineering at the University of Bremen have the possibility to move on to Ph.D. studies leading to the award of the academic title “Doktor-Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing.)? or “Doktor-Ingenieurin (Dr.-Ing.)?. Ph.D. studies end with completion of an independently researched and academically substantiated thesis – the doctoral dissertation – and a viva.
In principle, you can either study for your doctorate the traditional way by undertaking your own individual research project, or apply for admission to a structured study program offered by a graduate school. See the Doctoral Degree Regulations for admission to doctoral studies and other details.

On 20.08.2020 the "Promotionsordnung (Dr.-Ing.) der Universität Bremen für den Fachbereich 4 (Produktionstechnik)", new doctoral degree regulations for Faculty 4, came into force. Candidates who were accepted under the Promotionsordnung of 23.05.1984 and the Promotionsordnung of 14.03.2007 are asked to observe the transitional provisions under § 18 of the Promotionsordnung 2020.

- Receipt of the reports (the deadline for submitting applications applies.)
- PromA session: Formal review of the reports according to PromO 2020 §8 (4)
- (If formal requirements are met) forwarding of the reports to the candidate and beginning of the two-week blocking period
- Application for admission to the colloquium (after the blocking period; the deadline for application documents applies.)
- PromA session: Admission to the colloquium / appointment of the examination board
- Colloquium: 7 calendar days at the earliest after admission to the colloquium
